In this second volume of New Saints and blesseds of the Catholic Church are depicted the lives and deaths, the struggles and triumphs of those women and men who were raised to the honours of the altar by Pope John Paul II during the four years from 1984 through 1987. Among them are blesseds and saints from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds: laymen, religious, priests, and bishops, confessors and martyrs. Some, such as Elisabeth of the Trinity and Edith Stein, are well known. Many of them, however, have been largely unknown until now. And yet all of them not only deserve reverence but also are worthy of imitation in their striving for perfection and in their fidelity to the Catholic faith. The life of each one of these personages is portrayed briefly in a simple but elegant style, followed by excerpts from the homily given by the Pope at the beatification or canonization ceremony. These short biographies are edifying and touching, as well as illustrated with many pictures.
